Quite often we get the feeling of joy and gratitude in reverse order. We think that if we are feeling joy that it will make us grateful. This is backwards. We need to be grateful first, no matter the circumstances, and the feelings of joy will follow.

Christians should be the most grateful people. Gratitude is built into our faith. It is, however, a spiritual discipline, and it needs to be practiced. We need to learn to be content wherever we are with whatever we have, no matter the circumstances. The challenge is for us to be thankful and grateful in difficult circumstances. Even if we don’t feel grateful FOR everything, we can be grateful IN everything.

The post The Art and Science of Gratitude – Pt. 2 first appeared on Liferoads Church.

Humans tend to notice the bad over the good. We tend to focus on the negative far more than the positive. We have all experience one negative word drowning out many positive words. Why is that? And how can we change our hearts so the negative doesn't outweigh the positive as much?

God’s people should be the most grateful people.

Gratitude is powerful, but it is not automatic. (It requires expression)

Practice gratitude as a spiritual discipline.

Get in the habit of focusing on the things that go right! Try following these two suggestions:

Take two minutes every day to think of 3 things that you are thankful for and why you are thankful for them. Thank God for those things.

Take two minutes every day to write a brief message (email, text, facebook message, etc) to someone thanking them for something. Make it specific.
