In Matthew 6:1-15, Jesus makes it clear that spiritual practices are not for show. What we aim for in our spiritual lives, we receive. Don’t pray to impress or with formulaic expectations, as if God does not already know and He needs to be woken up or informed. Spiritual practices of generosity, worship and prayer are about a personal relationship with God. The Lord’s Prayer is a model or a map of prayer. Like many other books of prayer, it structures the ideas and guides us. Slow down and take your time through prayer. The first line alone is a shocking idea: God, the awesome creator, is our father. And what do you mean when you pray for God’s Kingdom? We need to live spiritually one day at a time – trust God for our manna (our daily bread). Just as Matthew wrote later in the chapter (6:25-34), “Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.”

The post Following Jesus – Week 4 first appeared on Liferoads Church.

We tend to think of Old Testament times as so different from our own - full of strange, old-fashioned problems that we might have trouble relating to in our modern era. When we take a closer look, though, we find that our times are not much different from theirs in some of the most important ways. Sure, our lives are different because of technology and modern conveniences, but the challenge of where we should place our hope and the battle between the true God and rival gods remains. Our times have their own false gods that demand our allegiance and tempt us to turn our eyes away from the living God. We will be looking at a key story each week from the lives of Elijah and Elisha in 1 and 2 Kings. These stories will help us understand and remember how to place our faith firmly in the true God in a time of widespread unbelief.

The stories of Elijah and Elisha are full of powerful encounters between the living God and the human problem of giving our hearts to rival “gods.” The stories from their lives are full of action and drama: fire from heaven, raising the dead, miraculous provision, and chariots of fire. But what do these ancient stories have to say to people living in a modern world?

It is good to ask questions, they help us understand ourselves better. When God asks questions it helps us know ourselves better and it helps us know Him better. When the Israelites were trapped between the Red Sea and the Egyptian army God asked Moses, "Why do you cry out to me ... go forward." Sometimes that is what we need to here. Have faith, trust in Him and move forward.
