Abide – Week 2

Daily engagement with Scripture is a core practice of abiding in Christ. We should be able to see the Bible not as an obligation or academic exercise, but as a living, life-giving means of growing in our relationship with Jesus. As God’s Word dwells richly in us, we are shaped, taught, and directed in our everyday faith.

Down to Earth – Week 2

Our culture has this strange pattern of the ‘humble brag,’ where we act as if we are humble—all the while we are boasting. Paul warned of such pride. C.S. Lewis called pride “the great sin.” It is sin curved inward on ourselves. God opposes the proud (⁠James 4:6⁠), Paul presents this plainly in ⁠1 Corinthians⁠. He surrenders any self-judgment. Only God is the judge. Paul stated in ⁠1 Timothy 1:15⁠ that he was the chief sinner. His goal was to fully honor God. Humility is the disappearance of self and the vision that God is all.

Lettuce statements for the Church

You probably didn’t feel a cultural pressure to attend church this morning. Most likely you wanted to come. Why is that? Why come to church? ⁠Hebrews 10:19-25⁠ provides us some answers to these questions. It states three “let us” statements about being together in church. First, let us draw near with hearts full of faith and cleansed by Jesus’ blood. The curtain was torn, and we have access to a new living way, full of ‘zoe’ life in Christ. Second, let us hold fast to our confession of hope in scripture, prayer and community. Finally, let us not neglect meeting together. There is something very different and very special about being together in a church – it is being with Christ in a way that differs from our solitary time with God. Let’s be realistic: there is no such thing as a perfect church—gather, encourage one another, encourage others, and love each other.

Following Jesus – Week 2

The synoptic gospels present Jesus’ temptation immediately following His baptism. We can expect challenges after spiritual peaks. The wilderness motif is common in scripture. It represents a dry and discouraging time that grows and matures us. It is a time that we must be dependent on God (⁠1 Peter 1:6-7⁠). Today in ⁠Matthew 3:13-4:11⁠, we look at the temptations of Christ. We must understand that temptation is not a sin. Jesus was tempted, just like we are (⁠Hebrews 4:15⁠). Temptation comes when we are most vulnerable, but it is not because we are in sin; it is a call to battle. Jesus battled temptation with the Word of God, the power of the Spirit, and by knowing His identity. These are the weapons that you, children of God, are called to use against the lies of the deceiver as well.

Stirred Up – Week 2

This week in ⁠2 Peter 1:16-21⁠, Donnie talks about the power of scripture. The Bible isn’t just any book. Peter explained how they have written from first-hand experience of Jesus. The message is the light of God; it is God’s guide to your life. One has to ask themselves, What is the authority in your life? I will put my trust in the revelation of our creator.
