]]> There is a common phrase that runs counterfeit to biblical wisdom. “You have to find yourself.” Many of us ask some hard identity questions, “who am I, where do I fit in, and how can I make a difference.” Israel had a similar struggle understanding who they were; first we must understand who God is (⁠Isaiah 43⁠). God knows you. Do not fear, you are precious to Him (⁠Numbers 6:23-27⁠). You are His Children and He has a new exodus planned for redemption (⁠Isaiah 43:14-32⁠). Not because Israel (nor you) are so worthy, but because God is so forgiving and so good (⁠Isaiah 43:22-28⁠). God has answers for you identity. You have purpose and you are loved (⁠Ephesians 1:7-10⁠).

Matthew (⁠12:1-21⁠) quotes this verse in Isaiah regarding the way Christ will not break those who are bruised, and will not snuff out those who are struggling. In fact, Jesus will grow that reed into spiritual strength and fan the dimming flames into a fire for Him.

]]> Over the past few weeks we have talked about where Ahaz and Hezekiah put their trust; Ahaz into his own plan and Hezekiah surrendered it all to God. Even though the nation was eventually sent into exile because of their worship of idols, God did not give up on His people or His plan (⁠Isaiah 40:1-8⁠). They will be a kingdom of priests (⁠Exodus 19:5-7⁠), and that is true for you today. So, beware of the voices that you listen to (⁠Isaiah 40:3-11⁠) and fill your mind with meditations of the grandeur of God (⁠Isaiah 40:12-26⁠). Trust in Him alone, He will renew your strength! (⁠Isaiah 40:27-30⁠)(⁠Psalm 23⁠)

]]> What do we do with seemingly impossible, extremely stressful circumstances? Maybe a bill we can’t pay, or illness that is dire. Even though Hezekiah was a good king, reestablishing the temple worship, he was put in a very desperate situation when he received a letter from Sennacherib, the king of Assyria. He was next on the list for destruction and torture (⁠Isaiah 36:1-22⁠). His response is opposite of his father Ahab (who did not go to the Lord, but depended on alliances with other nations. Hezekiah goes to God in the temple and puts the letter in His hands (⁠Isaiah 37:1-20)⁠. And God delivers! (⁠Isaiah 37:33-38⁠). You can transfer your burdens to Jesus (⁠Psalm 55:22)⁠ just as Hezekiah did, except you do not need a temple of stone – you are that temple (⁠Philippians 4:6-7⁠). Invite God into the experience of your life – all of it.

]]> It is hard to imagine the prophesies in Isaiah being written 700 years before Jesus, but when a young Bedouin shepherd found a scroll of Isaiah in a cave near the Dead Sea, predating Jesus by 150 years, this was pretty sound proof that these prophecies were not added after the fact. By the time of Isaiah, the kingship of the nation was a wreck. How could God fulfill His promise to David; that Israel will have great rest forever (2 Samuel ⁠7:10-14, 18-20⁠). Isaiah wrote: after great destruction, after the forest is leveled, there will be a root, a shoot will rise up that will lead in the perfect spirit of the Lord (⁠Isaiah 11:1-10⁠). This can only be Jesus. He told us His kingdom is here by quoting Isaiah 61 (⁠Luke 4:16-21⁠). But He stopped short of saying that the entire prophesy was fulfilled. Jesus is our king now, but there is still more to come, an eternal glory to come.

That message has echoed through the entire Bible, through history and still speaks today. The scene was shocking (⁠Isaiah 6:1-8⁠), the full glory of Jesus on the throne (⁠John 14:41⁠). Though Isaiah recognized his sin and the unrighteous state of his nation God purified him and sent him with a message (⁠Isaiah 6:9-13⁠). A greater servant will come and deliver all of creation (⁠Isaiah 52:13-15⁠). That greater servant is Jesus (⁠John 17:18⁠). And that message still rings true today.
