It may seem like the idols we read about are long gone and we need not worry about falling prey to such things, but they are still as strong as ever. They have gone underground. Our idols may not be made of stone and wood, but we are idol factories, and we were built to worship. In Isaiah 44:9-20, God puts Israel on trial again. “who is greater than God?” He takes a mocking tone that we should be so foolish as to worship creation over the creator (Psalm 115:1-8). Ultimately, we are making ourselves god. But the good news is that God forgives. He laid a path for the Israelites to be delivered (Isaiah 44:21-28) and He has come into creation as Jesus to offer you deliverance from out slavery to sin.

In response to Easter last week (Jesus victory over death) we worship (Matthew 28:1-10, 16-20). It is important to accept that everybody worships, it is a matter of what/who you worship. Worship can be misdirected or misguided, there are plenty of examples in the old testament, and plenty of examples today. That which we worship transforms us (Psalm 115:1-8). Let us be transformed into the image of God (2 Corinthians 3:18). Sing truth into your hearts.

We tend to think of Old Testament times as so different from our own - full of strange, old-fashioned problems that we might have trouble relating to in our modern era. When we take a closer look, though, we find that our times are not much different from theirs in some of the most important ways. Sure, our lives are different because of technology and modern conveniences, but the challenge of where we should place our hope and the battle between the true God and rival gods remains. Our times have their own false gods that demand our allegiance and tempt us to turn our eyes away from the living God. We will be looking at a key story each week from the lives of Elijah and Elisha in 1 and 2 Kings. These stories will help us understand and remember how to place our faith firmly in the true God in a time of widespread unbelief.

The stories of Elijah and Elisha are full of powerful encounters between the living God and the human problem of giving our hearts to rival “gods.” The stories from their lives are full of action and drama: fire from heaven, raising the dead, miraculous provision, and chariots of fire. But what do these ancient stories have to say to people living in a modern world?
