Abide – Week 4

There are several metaphors used to describe the Church. The most common description used in the Bible is a family. But, Paul also used the image of living bricks, and members of a body (⁠1 Corinthians 12:12-27⁠). We all desire to belong. People are always forming clubs and groups and teams. We build community to support each other and encourage each other. The Church differs in that Christ is the head of the body of the Church (⁠Ephesians 4:14-16⁠). This is unique. It is where we can be with our Creator like no where else on earth. We belong to Christ, and so we belong to each other. In that, we rejoice together and we suffer together. Jesus did. We are like the literal hands of Jesus. This is a spiritual disciple, a habit that changes lives.

Devoted

This message looks at the birth of the church in ⁠Acts 2⁠, beginning with Peter’s sermon at Pentecost and moving to a snapshot of the early Christian community. We explore what life looked like in that community — how believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. Their devotion led to unity, generosity, and joy that made their faith attractive to those around them. The message invites us to reflect on what it means to be a church marked by the same devotion, generosity, and glad hearts.

Lettuce statements for the Church

You probably didn’t feel a cultural pressure to attend church this morning. Most likely you wanted to come. Why is that? Why come to church? ⁠Hebrews 10:19-25⁠ provides us some answers to these questions. It states three “let us” statements about being together in church. First, let us draw near with hearts full of faith and cleansed by Jesus’ blood. The curtain was torn, and we have access to a new living way, full of ‘zoe’ life in Christ. Second, let us hold fast to our confession of hope in scripture, prayer and community. Finally, let us not neglect meeting together. There is something very different and very special about being together in a church – it is being with Christ in a way that differs from our solitary time with God. Let’s be realistic: there is no such thing as a perfect church—gather, encourage one another, encourage others, and love each other.

Following Jesus – Week 12

Throughout the Gospel of Matthew a picture of the Kingdom of Heaven is being presented. (⁠⁠⁠Matthew 19:16 – 20:28⁠⁠⁠) Jesus describes an upside-down kingdom that reflects the character of its King—marked by generosity, grace, and servanthood rather than power, wealth, or status. It begins now, overlapping with this world as Jesus rules in the hearts of His followers, calling them to humility, forgiveness, and sacrificial love that mirror His own life and mission.

Sojourners & Exiles Week 8

Today Nathan Harris finishes our teaching on the epistle of 1 Peter. In ⁠1 Peter 4:17–5:14⁠, we find a difficult challenge to grow through suffering. Glory and suffering are two sides of the same coin. But how do we not just get through it; how do we grow through it? We have to be community-minded; we are not alone in this; God has not abandoned us. He put us in a community. Take care of each other. God is drawing us closer (to each other and to Him). To do this, we must live humbly and recognize that we play a part in God’s big story. God does the work; He has the last word, but we are part of the great story of His creation.

So, engage in the community and help each other. Be part of church; serve each other. We are in this all together, and God has appointed us to be the royal priesthood to the world. Let’s worship our creator and Savior as we help each other and grow together.
