]]> There is a Christian maxim, origin unknown, “Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.” Take sin seriously! Sin ruins. However, do not carry your sin (or others) as a burden; we have an advocate. “[Jesus] is the propitiation for our sins,” meaning He has turned God’s wrath into favor through His love (⁠1 John 2:1-2⁠). Jesus’ love language is obedience. That word might make us flinch, but if we have accepted His grace and seek Him, we will find great confidence and assurance in following His wisdom (⁠1 John 2:3-6⁠). It begins with the Great Commandment (⁠John 13:34-35⁠), Love God and Love people (⁠1 John 2:7-11⁠)(⁠⁠1 John 2:12-17⁠⁠). Keep in mind that loving God means not loving the things of the world, for we cannot serve two masters (⁠Matthew 6:24⁠). Obedience to the world is incompatible with obedience to Christ. Just as Jesus prayed, “I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth.”(⁠John 17:14-19⁠).

The reason is sin. Like a crack in a screen, there is a flaw in the perfection of creation. All creation groans, we groan, the Spirit groans for the completion of redemption (⁠Romans 8:18-30⁠). It is not that suffering should not be minimized, it is that the glory of God’s redemption should be maximized (⁠2 Corinthians 4:16-18⁠). God will complete the good work He has started (⁠Philippians 1:6⁠).

Paul wrote, maybe, the most encouraging words of what the Gospel is. ⁠Romans 8⁠ tells us our verdict (no condemnation), how we should respond (in thought and action), an how we are empowered (with Christ spirit in us). We are not condemned, we are in union with Christ! So, set our mind on what Jesus had done, and walk according to His spirit. It is a ‘long and obedient walk in the same direction.’ Christian maturity is not independent strength, it is a dependance on God, more and more.

Until we face a situation where the reasoning behind the law becomes clear.  We received the laws through Moses and they were meant to lead and guide us closer to God, our tutor or guide until Jesus came to fulfill His promise to Abraham. Jesus fulfilled the law. His sacrifice redeemed us from our transgressions so the distance between us and God could be closed permanently.
