More Than Conquerors – Week 3

How things should be and how they are do not match up. The reason is sin. Like a crack in a screen, there is a flaw in the perfection of creation. All creation groans, we groan, the Spirit groans for the completion of redemption (⁠Romans 8:18-30⁠). It is not that suffering should not be minimized, it is that the glory of God’s redemption should be maximized (⁠2 Corinthians 4:16-18⁠). God will complete the good work He has started (⁠Philippians 1:6⁠).

Romans 8⁠ calls believers to take sin seriously, not by living in fear, but by remembering who they are in Christ. This message explores the battle between the flesh and the Spirit, the call to “put to death” sin by the Spirit’s power, and the incredible reality that through Jesus we are adopted into God’s family as sons and daughters. Rather than being defined by shame or slavery, Christians are invited to live from a new identity as children and heirs of God.

More Than Conquerors – Week 1

The Gospel is more than a being door opened to a new relationship. It is a relationship with Christ the creator. The Gospel is God transforming us. Paul wrote, maybe, the most encouraging words of what the Gospel is. ⁠Romans 8⁠ tells us our verdict (no condemnation), how we should respond (in thought and action), an how we are empowered (with Christ spirit in us). We are not condemned, we are in union with Christ! So, set our mind on what Jesus had done, and walk according to His spirit. It is a ‘long and obedient walk in the same direction.’ Christian maturity is not independent strength, it is a dependance on God, more and more.

Out of the Whirlwind – Week 2

We do not serve a pocket sized God. If we get anything from the book of Job it is that our God is BIG – and we can trust Him. Though Job’s friends comfort him at first (⁠Job 2:11-13⁠), they slowly turn from good, to the bad and the ugly. Too often (like Job’s friends) we have a karma attitude about bad things happening; that there is a deserved. Let’s not be miserable comforters (⁠Job 16⁠). We need to listen, to those who are suffering, and listen to the Holy Spirit. For, where do we find wisdom? We wisdom by trusting it in a great God. Just as Job recognized, God has a plan (⁠Romans 8:28⁠), and no matter how hard life is our redeemer lives (⁠Job 19:25⁠).

Out of the Whirlwind – Week 1

Job is a challenging book. He experienced suffering for no apparent reason (⁠Job 1:8-22⁠), though his friends are certain that he must have done something to deserve it (⁠Job 2:1-12⁠). In the end, God’s response is to remind him of the power, knowledge and sovereignty of God himself. But we are left without a satisfying reason for suffering and questions of justice. This is exactly how we experience much of suffering. Many questions are left. Job understands we are to trust and rest in knowing God is good and all-powerful. This is the lesson for us as well, for we know that God works all things for good according to His purpose (⁠Romans 8:28⁠).
