Waiting Room – Hope

How do we be patient in our waiting periods? How do we recognize that it is not a waste of time? The fall broke our relationship with God, others, creation, and ourselves. However, in the same verses of Genesis that describe the fall, God presents the protoevangelium; the first good news of the redeemer. Jesus is that redeemer. He brought Himself down to a position such that Satan could strike His heel, yet in the same act, Jesus crushed Satan (John 12:28-31). This was God’s plan before the foundation of the world (1 Peter 1:19-20) (Rev 13:8). And God’s plan requires waiting. During this time God is doing great things in us and around us. We have hope in this, and we must be patient (James 5:7-11). For, we who wait shall have renewed strength and will not be exhausted. We shall mount with wings like eagles and we will run without weary (Isaiah 40:30-31).

Following Jesus – Week 2

The synoptic gospels present Jesus’ temptation immediately following His baptism. We can expect challenges after spiritual peaks. The wilderness motif is common in scripture. It represents a dry and discouraging time that grows and matures us. It is a time that we must be dependent on God (⁠1 Peter 1:6-7⁠). Today in ⁠Matthew 3:13-4:11⁠, we look at the temptations of Christ. We must understand that temptation is not a sin. Jesus was tempted, just like we are (⁠Hebrews 4:15⁠). Temptation comes when we are most vulnerable, but it is not because we are in sin; it is a call to battle. Jesus battled temptation with the Word of God, the power of the Spirit, and by knowing His identity. These are the weapons that you, children of God, are called to use against the lies of the deceiver as well.

A Living Redeemer – Week 1

Introducing ⁠Ruth⁠. We look at the three main characters in this story and read excerpts of ⁠chapters 1 & 2⁠. This is a small story of redemption – in the larger book of God’s redemption. Where one would expect there to be prejudice, there is dignity and acceptance. We can see how reflecting God’s kindness and love has a bigger role than you would expect.

Don’t let circumstances define you. Let God’s redemption define you. Be redeemed. Live redeemed.

Sojourners & Exiles Week 8

Today Nathan Harris finishes our teaching on the epistle of 1 Peter. In ⁠1 Peter 4:17–5:14⁠, we find a difficult challenge to grow through suffering. Glory and suffering are two sides of the same coin. But how do we not just get through it; how do we grow through it? We have to be community-minded; we are not alone in this; God has not abandoned us. He put us in a community. Take care of each other. God is drawing us closer (to each other and to Him). To do this, we must live humbly and recognize that we play a part in God’s big story. God does the work; He has the last word, but we are part of the great story of His creation.

So, engage in the community and help each other. Be part of church; serve each other. We are in this all together, and God has appointed us to be the royal priesthood to the world. Let’s worship our creator and Savior as we help each other and grow together.

Today Peter talks about marriage. This can be a touchy subject, but realize that God has made it a unique institution for immense growth. It is one of the few institutions that God established, and if respected, it has a very powerful spiritual effect. 1 Peter 3:1-7 has encouraging words for wives and husbands. Respect, love, and honor each other. Value each other as Christ values you! Act to each other the way Jesus has acted to you—in patience, dignity, and love.

Today in ⁠⁠1 Peter 2:11-25⁠⁠ we ask, What do we fear? Do we fear public ridicule, being a social outcast, or just simply not fitting in? We are citizens of a different kingdom, and all we have to fear is the Lord. But this fear is not a debilitating fear. It is a fear of reverence, an understanding of authority; it is understanding who we are and who God is. Jesus calls us to have a similar respect for earthly authority as well. In the manner of the book “In His Steps,” we should ask ourselves, What would Jesus do in this situation? Bring Jesus into every moment of your life and fear the Lord.
